Les Châtaigniers is 2km from the centre of the pretty town of Pluméliau. The town has two boulangeries, two small supermarkets, a pharmacy, a petrol station, a pizzeria, restaurants and several bars. The nearby towns of Baud (10 minutes) and Pontivy (20 minutes) also have an excellent selection of shops and restaurants - as well as a swimming pool.
To the west of Pluméliau is the picturesque hamlet of St-Nicolas-des-Eaux (5km) on the River Blavet. The hamlet's church - St-Nicodème - is well known for its beautiful architecture. To the east of Pluméliau are the lovely towns of Josselin, Malestroit and Rochefort-en-Terre - all worth a visit during your holiday.
Being in the south of Brittany, Morbihan has a warmer climate than the rest of Brittany. With the mild winters and warm summers, it's attractions can be enjoyed all year round. The departément is named after the Gulf of Morbihan, 'Morbihan' meaning in Breton 'little sea'. The Gulf is almost an inland sea, with it's own microclimate. The coastline offers miles of sandy beaches, and off it are over 40 islands and islets.
History Pluméliau ("Pluniau" in Breton) derived its name from Plou-Meliau, which means the place where the followers of St-Meliau lived. The town has always been an important thoroughfare for linking Brittany to destinations further south. As well as major road links, both the canal and the railway pass through the commune, which have been vital for transporting agricultural products to and from the area in the past.
The river The commune of Pluméliau encompasses the hamlet of St-Nicolas-des-Eaux, which is situated on the River Blavet. St-Nicolas has always been an important location - it has been populated by the Celts, the Romans and the Rohans. The riverside hamlet is now popular with tourists and offers a range of river-based leisure activities, including boat trips along the river.
